Large Family Helps: What To Do With Shoes?

Welcome to my Large Family Helps series where I share with my readers some of my favorite tips for managing a household with lots of children. I don't consider my own family "large," but we have enough children (five) in our home that I have benefited greatly from utilizing these practices in our home.

Once we had 3 children who were all walking, it seemed that we had an explosion of shoes in our home. Have you experienced this phenomenon?

We tried lots of systems for storing and containing shoes– the shoe pockets on the back of the closet door, the boxes under beds, etc. You know, all the ususal shoe solutions.

When we had four children and two adults in our small  house, it was clear that something had to be done. So I asked God to give me some creative solution for our shoes. He always gives me something.

Then it came to me– we had several milk crates from a dairy. I had Hubby mount them on the basement wall. Presto! Shoe shelves for the older 3 children!

They don't look neat and tidy, but they don't really need to. They're on the wall in the basement near the washer and dryer (aka laundry station) where no one really ventures too often anyway. It's a basement, after all.

But the shoes are off of the floor and out of the way. Perfect for me.

Now we just need to hang a couple more…

What's your shoe system?
